General Information

Floriana is the suburb of Malta's capital city, Valletta. It is a town enriched with heritage which spans more than three centuries, dating back to the Knights of the Order of St. John who built most of the town. In fact, Floriana's first name was Borgo Vilhena, named after the Grand Master Antoine Manoel de Vilhena, who was responsible for the first housing plans for Floriana.

A characteristic of the Maltese skyline is the large number of church domes and steeples. Floriana's church is definitely one of the most characteristic, with its imposing facade certainly its most attracting feature. The Parish Church of Floriana is dedicated to Saint Publius and a feast in his honour is celebrated annually, two Sundays after Easter. The church is a museum in itself, with various works of sacred art enriching it. The most precious work which all the residents of Floriana hold at heart is definitely the statue of St. Publius, a prestigious work of art carved in wood by Vincenzo Dimech in 1811.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite all foreigners willing to visit our church or participate in our feast, to email us should they request further information on our suburb and in particular, our church. It will be a pleasure for us to assist you in planning your visit.

You can also find more information on the suburb on the website of the Floriana Local Council.
